Yohan and Ellie – Cacophony of Lincoln

There is a gonzo like honesty about this piece which seems to represent a simple recorders impression with the artist at times appearing in the soundscape. Don’t be fooled by this style into thinking the artist has not used this as a deliberay strategy to create meaning. Editorial choices have been made which convince you that this is actually “as it happened”. It didn’t; this is as much Yohan and Ellie’s creation as any other work. Reality does not exist it is a creative construct.

There is a sub heading to the original audio which the artist added “corkscrew dick envy”. I add this as a point of principle. I refuse to censor art and that is another intellectual debate you should have with yourself.

Sam Swannack

Sam produces a apparently naturalistic piece but in actual fact this is highly crafted. There are a range of location sounds and listening you can easily tell that these have been mixed. It’s important to recognise with soundscape that nothing is ever truly natural as the artist has made a range of decisions regarding the audio before you as the listener get close to it. The artist has chosen location, the sounds to record, the sounds to put in the final piece, the mix and finally the output medium. I will write more on the other end of the abstract spectrum (formalism) in a later post.

Sam’s original upload  was the first piece SS1 followed by a 3 minute  gap and then the final statement (SS2). Sam if you would like to comment on whether this was a deliberate creative strategy or not all well and good. If so i will add your comments and reinstate the original piece.

Legs

This group gives us a short piece with ample pace and effects. Its manipulation of the word “legs” throughout the 5.1 second of the recording leaves the listener with a range of questions. The soundscape is admittedly slightly disturbing but does that say more about me or the artist’s intention to shock. A simple work manipulated to subvert its meaning is the core of experimental art and an interpretive paradigm.

C5

IMG_3771Group C5 offer this which has some rhythmic pulsing and appears to be a combination of inside and outside locations which mix together to confuse the audience. What will Sound artist Steve Kirkby make of it in his final production?

This initial work by C5 has a certain naturalistic approach but it’s clear that the mixing of locations offer a suitable movement toward the formalist end of the abstract spectrum although this still remains firmly within the natural agenda.

Raw Audio

Well not that Raw! All day teams were coming back with their recordings and through a massive effort and good humour in the face of equipment problems we managed to get the material edited. From, in most cases, the teams not knowing a thing about audio editing this was a remarkable feat. See the tweets for some of the pictures. In the following posts you can hear and in some cases see what they were getting up to. Now the next phase starts. Getting the audio to the sound artist and forging the soundscapes into a piece of art.

During the next few days the edits will appear in this section so keep an eye out for your. I would like pictures to put in as well so if you did you selfies tweet them over with which soundscape they should go with.
